Early signs of aging: focused on the eyes

One of the first areas of the face to show signs of aging are the eyes. The thin skin of the upper and lower eyelids is especially prone to sun damage and the aging effects of volume loss. With eyelid drooping the skin of the eyelids begins to encroach onto the eyelashes, obscuring the upper eyelid skin. Many women remark that they're no longer able to wear eye shadow as a result.

I'm often asked what can be done about drooping of the upper eyelids and whether surgery is an option.

Non-surgical approach to early upper eyelid drooping

For those with early sign of drooping of the lateral upper eyelid a great non-surgical option is injection of a filler such as Restylane or Juvederm. This early drooping is often a result of volume loss of the eyebrow region. With less support of the skin in the area the skin tends to droop down. A filler treatment can be done in about 10 minutes in the office with very minimal down time.

Blepharoplasty surgery to remove excess upper eyelid skin

With more severe upper eyelid skin excess volume enhancement alone will not be sufficient to improve the aesthetics of the eyes. In these cases an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a great treatment option.  This involves removing some of the excess skin of the upper eyelid while hiding the resulting scar in the pre-existing crease of the lid. My preferred approach to upper eyelid rejuvenation is to maintain or enhance the volume in the periorbital region. I use specific techniques to improve the periorbital volume. In some instances facial fat grafting can be combined with eyelid surgery to further improve the appearance of the face.

The patient shown at the right had several facial rejuvenative procedures done concurrently. Focusing on her eye, I was able to bring about better balance by peforming a conservative upper eyelid blepharoplasty combines with facial fat grafting and a lower lid blepharoplasty and endocopic brow lift.
