Many people considering facelift surgery are worried about having obvious incision line after surgery. This is understandable as many people want to be discrete when it comes to having rejuvenative facelift surgery. In a recent RealSelf post I discussed this issue which led to me the idea of elaborating even further about facelift incisions in my blog.

How to camoflague your facelift incisions

The first step in creating seamless facelift scars is the design of the incisions to begin with. The placement of incisions in front of the ear can involve hiding the scar in an existing per-auricular crease. For patients without a crease an alternative is to hide the scar even further by curing the incision behind the tragus somewhat. Careful tissue handling and incision closure are also very important steps in creating a great result.

No matter what technique is used, the incision lines will be somewhat pink at first before fading to a more normal skin color. What can you do to cover the scars in the meantime? First, styling your hair such that it covers your incisions is a good solution. If you have longer hair avoid pulling it up during the healing period as this will make it a bit easier to see the scars behind your ears. Another option is to use makeup to help camoflague your incision lines. Makeup with a green tint helps cover the red. I often recommend a mineral based makeup as this is gentlest for the sensitive skin as it heals.

Another important step is to make sure to avoid exposing your scars to the sun for 6-12 months after surgery. I recommend using a sun block of at least 30 SPF when going outside. This helps prevent permanent redness of the scars.
